Ok, not really published, but printed. Ok, I've been printed in excerpt. Parents Magazine had an article not long ago about the 'baby-haters' out there. You know those people, the ones who look at kids like they are the bain of existance and they shouldn't breathe the same air these people are breathing. No matter how good and cute a kid is, the baby-haters can't stand them since they are walking snotty, poopy, germ factories. Don't get me wrong, everyone can be annoyed by kids at one point or another. A kid throwing a temper tantrum in the middle of the store can still irk me. Or a mom giving in to her every kid's desire even after she's said NO numerous times makes me roll my eyes. But I don't dislike all kids just on sight alone.
So, I had to comment. This is what I wrote:
"I am a mom of an adorable 8 mo. old girl. I completely agree with Ms.
Dolgoff when she says there is a lot of open hostility towards children
today. Children get evil looks all the time over things they can't help.
However, I think there are times where children get evil looks because
parents put them into difficult and avoidable situations. How many times
have you gone out shopping at 10 pm and have seen toddlers crying in
carts? Or gone to five star restaraunt to have an 9 month old bored and
screaming at the table next to you because there is nothing to do and have
been there for too long?
Children are often held up to unreasonable expectations and understandably
break down. Missing a nap, being out to late, being subjected to
child-unfriendly places, being dragged over God's-green-earth all day is
bound to set a child off and get nasty looks. So yes, nasty Child-haters
are intolerable but so are parents who don't let kids be kids and don't give
them what they need."
This is what they actually published:
"I completely agree wtih "The Baby Backlash". There's a lot of open hostility toward children today. However, I do think there are times when kids get those dirty looks because their parents put them in inapproprate situations. How many times have you gone shopping in the evening and seen tired, cranky toddlers? So, yes, "baby haters" are intolerable, but so are parents who don't give kids what they need."
So there you have it--my first letter to the editor that has been published. I think I've only written three in my life, so 1 out of 3 isn't bad!
